07/27/13 - St John and Drive to Augusta, ME

On the way to Augusta, we passed by and visited the Reversing Falls. During high tide, the water rushes from downstream to upstream and creates a reversing falls.  Augusta, ME is another city we decided to stay and avoid long drive. It was not part of our original plan.

When we got to Augusta, the sky was cleared and it was hot.  Augusta is the capital of Maine. We visited Maine State Capital and Capital Park.  It is interesting to see the Samantha Smith statues just outside the Maine State Museum. It is to remember a young girl from Maine who became an international celebrity with her letter to the leader of the USSR pleading for peace. 

We were at Maine State Museum just before the closing time.  One of the staff let us to just walk around the front portion of the museum for free.  For just a few minutes, we learned that Maine was one of the major sardine producing states.  Then, we drove around the town and visited a little river park along the Kennebec River.
